Prof. Ing. Ján Tomáš, CSc. was born in Dlhé nad Cirochou (district of Snina) on May the 1st 1948. He attended the primary school in his native village from 1954 to 1963. He completed his secondary education at the Secondary Agricultural and Technical School in Medzilaborce in 1967. In 1967-1972 he studied at the Slovak University of Agriculture, Faculty of Agronomy where he obtained the title of Engineer (Ing.) in Phytotechnics. After a successful completion of his postgradual research and habilitation exam he obtained the title of associated professor in General Phytotechnics at the Faculty of Agronomy in 1986. He became a profesor specialized in the field of Agricultural Products Processing in 2006. In 1996-1999 he acted as vice-rector for Development at the Slovak University of Agriculture. He was the Head of the Department of Chemistry in 2001-2002. After the creation of the Faculty of Biotechnology and Food Sciences he became its vice-dean for development (2003-2006) and member of the Scientific Committee of the University. Based on the Rector’s proposal he became the vice-rector for Development and successfully accomplished this role from 2006 to 2010. In 2006 he became a member of the Scientific committee at the Constantine the Philosopher University in Nitra and at the Faculty of Chemical and Food Technology, Slovak University of Technology in Bratislava. He has been a member of the Cultural and Educational Grant Agency of the Ministry of Education, Science, Research and Sport of the Slovak republic KEGA since 2003. In 2008 he became a member of the ediotorial board of the scientific journal Agrochemistry. He is a guarantee for several degree programs at the Faculty of Biotechnology and Food Sciences and a member of the Committee for the Agrochemistry and Plant Nutrition program.

His previous research focused on the ecological complex systems in relation to the industry of the regions of Upper Nitra and Zemplín. Currently, he is interested in studying the amounts of various contaminants in water, soil and plant products used in food industry. He is involved in several VEGA, KEGA and SRDA projects.

He is listed as a coauthor of four books, 13 textbooks, and four monographs. He has 217 publications, nine of them are listed in the CC Thomsons Reuters database. He has participated at Slovak and international conferences, discussing about his reseach outcomes in form of presentations and posters.

Prof. Tomáš also shares his scientific knowledge with fellow colleagues and students. He has been working as a pedagogue at the Department of Chemistry for 37 years. He has been a mentor for 51 undergraduate and graduate students as well as 10 PhD students.
